The London Tall Buildings Survey 2021: Emerging ambient networks

New London Architecture (NLA), in conjunction with Knight Frank, have released the 2021 publication of the Tall Buildings Survey. This survey analyses the pipeline and market for London’s tall buildings and gives developers a forecast of growth and trends in the industry.

From growing optimism created by the Covid-19 vaccine, to the unknown future position on a post-Brexit London on the global stage, this year’s publication highlights the balance of uncertainty and optimism that currently defines the market.

In addition, it has also been the year of rapid policy change, including the new London Plan finally being given approval on 29th January 2021, and visibility of the direction of government’s Future Homes Standard and Future Buildings Standard.

Emerging ambient networks

In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in the capabilities of ambient loops as the industry strives to find a communal heating system which is more efficient, cuts CO2 emissions and is financially viable in both upfront and operational costs, all whilst being able to connect to a district heat network.

Two of the case studies listed within the tall buildings survey (Mill Harbour and Ravensbourne Wharf) are now stating their intention to use ambient (or low temperature) networks and in-apartment heat pump technology to provide thermally comfortable and efficient spaces.

Phill Terry, Business Development Manager in London for the Zeroth Energy System, has spent the last four years supporting such projects with developers and specifiers, and is excited to see this technology become more common place.

“After being successfully installed in a number of smaller developments within and outside of London, it’s great seeing these projects starting to gain recognition. I have been involved in conversation around so many of these London based projects looking at the Zeroth Energy System I’m pleased to see them starting to progress”
