Lot 20

What is Lot 20 legislation?

From the 1st January 2018, all local space heaters manufactured for sale in the UK must comply with a minimum efficiency standard under Lot 20 of the Energy Efficiency Directive. It is part of the EU and UK's commitment to driving energy efficiency at all stages of the supply chain, from production to final consumption of heaters. Lot 20 focuses on the energy efficiency of local space heaters, as half of energy consumed in our homes is used to heat water and space, this plays a key role in driving green initiatives and reducing the environmental impact of heating products.

Products affected by Lot 20 legislation

Portable Heaters

A legislation change for electric portable heating is that products that require wall mounting must now feature a 24-hour, 7 day timer with either adaptive start or an open window sensor.

The onus on meeting Lot 20 requirements to comply with a minimum efficiency standard is firmly with the manufacturer. This regulation was ratified in April 2015 and Dimplex, like other reputable manufacturers, has been working hard since that point to redesign products to suit the regulation. As a result, our entire product portfolio was compliant before the end of 2017, ahead of the January 2018 deadline.

FAQs

Local room (or space) heating products are defined as appliances that provide heat to indoor spaces by generating heat in the location within which they are situated. Like other product categories, the aim is to rule out inefficient technologies and reduce the energy used in our homes, helping to achieve our overall carbon reduction targets.

The key to driving efficiency of local space heaters is in the way in which their operation is regulated using intelligent timers and controls. Reputable manufacturers, such as Dimplex, have been working hard since the regulation was ratified in 2015 to redesign products to suit the regulation. Most higher specification products from leading manufacturers will usually be within the new regulations – but you may find that some entry-level products now have integral timers or controls to meet the requirements of Lot 20.

By specifying the latest products, installers can give their customers confidence that they have a better quality product, using smart technologies that can help keep running costs to a minimum. It is also a great opportunity to re-engage with previous customers, inform them about the legislation to provide the latest compliant devices to ensure maximum efficiency (and minimum running costs).

Lot 20 requires that the consumption and emissions for local electric space heaters must be reduced by applying “existing, non-proprietary technologies” without an increase in the combined costs of purchasing and operating the products.

With the recent advancements in the Internet of Things and smart technologies, there is a real opportunity for electric space heaters, in particular, to drive energy efficiency through intelligent, adaptive controls.

The latest products can include temperature control with presence detection or open window detection, distance control via an app, and even adaptive start control to suit the requirements of the user.

Speak to your manufacturer of choice first, which should always be a source of information to make sure you are up to date - not only with its products and technologies, but also with the latest industry trends and developments. You can also register your interest at the new Lot 20 website where further information will be available soon.

Look out for the ‘EcoDesign Compliant’ logo on the product listing, and read the specific product description to ensure you are purchasing a Lot20 compliant product. By choosing a Lot 20 compliant product you will be both reducing running costs and contributing to the UK’s energy saving targets.

How Dimplex can help with Lot 20 compliance

Smart Controls

Dimplex Smart Controls, paired with our range of electric space heaters and hot water heating solutions, can help us reduce our energy consumption and live more environmentally friendly lives without compromising on our comfort. Our suite of apps are designed to meet the various needs of users, from complex whole home heating solutions to simple plug and play.

Highly accurate thermostats

The EcoDesign Lot 20 product regulations for installed heating products are a little more advanced. It states that all installed electric heating products manufactured from January 2018 must have an electronic thermostat with a 24-hour, 7 day timer. Dimplex space heaters' thermostats are accurate to ±0.2°C of the indicated temperature with easy and intuitive temperature controls.

Open Window Detection

Open Window Detection is an energy saving feature that works by measuring the heat-up and cool-down times of the room. Some Dimplex heaters can work out when to start heating to reach the user-defined target temperature at a specified time. This intelligent function continually adapts to the current environment, minimising wasted energy which could help users reduce their heating bills.

Adaptive Start control and Away modes

Adaptive Start control is a delayed start function. This feature learns the thermal characteristics of a room then determines how long the appliance needs to operate to reach target temperature according to room size, heat losses, prevailing weather conditions and so on. The improved Away mode maintains a low temperature to help prevent mould or damp and returns to the pre-set heating schedule at the set return date and/or time.
